Moving is a hectic, difficult thing that Americans do each and every year. The amount of work, time and money spent just to move your household items to a new place is exhausting but there are several Americans that do an even harder move and that is moving abroad. Many US companies are international so more employees from the United States are now working in countries all over the world. Moving abroad takes a great deal of planning. As with all moves, the amount of the cost to move is based on the weight of all of your items. Before you decide to take everything you own, you may want to decide on how long you are planning to live abroad. Many companies send their American employees to work internationally for only 2-3 years so you may want to use that to weigh you decision on how much to bring.
Another thing to address before deciding what to bring with you overseas is that the living quarters and homes are typically smaller than homes in the United States. Kitchens tend to be the biggest difference with those spaces being considerably smaller than an American kitchen. This needs to be contemplated on the amount of kitchen dishes you may want to pack.
Another thing you will not want to move are electronics, appliances and anything electrical. The electrical outlets and energy output in Europe as well as other countries is totally different than it is here. So no refrigerators and even no hair dryers should be packed up to take on your international move. All of those should be purchased once you arrive there.
If your move is going to be a short term one, and the plan is to move back to the same place you are living in currently, then many people choose to rent their current home out for that duration and put most of their furniture into storage or rent it totally furnished. Then they choose to just bring their personal items and rent a home overseas that is fully furnished and equipped for their shorter stay there. This saves a lot of energy, hassle and expense.
When moving abroad there are some things that you simply cannot take. If you are a great lover of live plants and trees, those will not be allowed to be transported into another country. Another heartbreaking situation is if you own a pet such as a dog, that pet must be quarantined for 6 months before being able to join you overseas. Some families can't bear doing that to their pet and give it to a good home instead. Also, the actual shipping and moving process takes 2-3 weeks so you should plan accordingly for that time frame too.
